The Mijas Town Hall constructed the racecourse, as a tourist attraction, in 2000.
They were successful in attracting both Spanish and international trainers to the course and in letting some of the business units on couse to both Spanish & foreign businesses.
Initially entrance to the course was free, but in 2003 the Town Hall sought to recover some of the building & development costs by imposing a €3 adult entry charge.
When Carrera Entertainment took over the course in January 2004 they increased this to €5 for adults, still well below that charged in other European countries. This was again increased in 2005 to €7, but this includes a full colour race programme and form guide, given to every paying entrant at the turnstiles.
On taking over the course at Mijas Carrera Entertainment immediately substituted the basic sand track with a high quality fibrous sand, all weather track surface.
